Our Sessions

Bereavement counselling can help you to explore your feelings and come to terms with your grief by talking one to one with a trained counsellor. You will have a number of sessions with your counsellor spread over weeks or months, until you are ready to stop. During these sessions you can talk about how you feel and your counsellor will listen and comment, rather than giving you advice.

Counselling is called a talking therapy. It helps you to explore your feelings and come to terms with your grief in a place where you can speak openly with someone trained to help and support you. You and your counsellor meet, usually once a week, in a private setting. Each session lasts for 50 minutes.

When our office in Ealing is not in use by staff, it is used as a counselling room. We do however hire counselling rooms in various places round the Borough. These are accessible by public transport.

How many sessions will I have?

How many sessions you have depends on your needs. Your bereavement counsellor will meet with you for up to 24 weeks or possibly more, if required. Counsellors do not give advice or tell you what you should do.

At the first session they will ask you what you wish to get out of counselling. Subsequently, your counsellor will help you to explore and express your feelings, and reassure you that they are normal. It’s easy to bottle things up after a bereavement, especially if you need to ‘cope’ in order to get back to work or support other family members or your children. Additionally, counselling gives you an opportunity to talk openly in a way that might not be possible with your family and friends.

Counsellors see people in your situation often and are used to listening to people who are distressed – they won’t be shocked by what you may be feeling or by what you may say. Many people find it a relief simply to talk to a stranger. The greatest benefits from bereavement counselling are gained when attendance is regular and the relationship between you and the counsellor is given time to work. If you attend irregularly, it may be that you are unable to give the commitment needed and we may suggest that you come back to Bereft when you feel ready to do so.

Donations for the

Bereft relies heavily on donations from clients who use our service. All counsellors give their services free but there are costs incurred in running Bereft. So, the donations you give ensure that we can continue to pay these costs and support others. We suggest anything from £20.00 per session. No one, however, is turned away because they cannot afford a donation. We would prefer donations to be made by bank transfer, but we will also accept cash or cheque via your counsellor. Alternatively, donations can be made via Just Giving. If your financial circumstances change, then please talk to your counsellor about changing your donation.
